Avoiding Burnout
Wisdom is seeing the problem before it happens. You donât want to learn about traffic safety through a car accident; in other words, you donât want to learn about burnout after you have already burnt out. Consider, first, the symptoms of this syndrome.
Communication is a large factor of life itself. If you are working with others, it can be stressful to not be informed of important details for your task. This applies to home or school situations as well, when important parts of your task are left out by your peers, the stress piles up, leading to a feeling of defeat. Having an unclear view of your own role is another destructive attribute. You may be taking on too much work, or perhaps you do too little. You may not understand what exactly is expected of you. This can lead to humiliation and self-doubt.
Many occupations have highly stressful environments. Oftentimes, you can easily become attached to something about work, and that attachment follows you home. It may be an unfixed issue or something that someone has said. This can lead to your personal time being invaded by work. If itâs not an urgent problem that affects your life to a supreme level, is it a valuable use of your time and energy? Donât let your mind wander to issues that you cannot fix immediately. Doing so will wear you thin, much like an old shirt. If said shirt has been worn for years without much care, then it will eventually thin out, and rips and tears will render it useless for its original purpose. Your own energy levels, mental faculties, and emotional energy can thin out similarly. To avoid this, take breaks and remember to dedicate energy to other aspects of your day. Communicate clear boundaries between your personal and work lives. Itâs tempting to be connected to your job at all times through cellular devices and the internet. However, itâs wise to make rules for yourself in that situation. Set certain times of the day where you donât check on unnecessary work items. Set these boundaries so you do not become a slave to secular work. Also, do not neglect personal and physical needs. You are not just your job. Leave work problems where they belong: at work.
However, what about the time you spend at work? You cannot avoid work problems when youâre actually there. One example of an energy-draining situation is if youâre pressured to fit into unrealistic productivity standards. This problem is often associated with those in the entertainment industry, where standards for all aspects of life are high. Experiencing constant societal pressure can weigh you down and cause emotional problems that will leave long-lasting effects. Even if youâre not involved in an industry like this, a similar type of pressure may also come from coworkers and management.
